Upgrading Your Computer Keyboard

When planning a PC upgrade, many people overlook the importance of their computer keyboard. For many computer users, a standard keyboard with the keys arranged in straight rows is completely fine to use. But for others, the layout of a keyboard can lead to hand strain and wrist injury.

If your keyboard is too hard to press or too light to press, or if typing on your keyboard causes your wrists to ache, you need to buy a new keyboard that is more user-friendly. Computer keyboards are relatively inexpensive so you will not need to break the bank to buy a keyboard that is easy and comfortable to use.

Many keyboards are ergonomically designed to make typing lighter on your hands and wrists. Some are designed to make tasks easier to do. These advanced keyboards can have buttons that you can press to immediately execute complex commands such as a refreshing a web page, copying and pasting text, and loading common applications.

You also have a choice between a corded keyboard and a wireless keyboard. Wireless keyboards make your desk look neat but you may find it a hassle to keep changing the batteries. A wired keyboard will run constantly so long as your computer is turned on. Thus, you have the assurance of continued performance at the cost of unsightly wires.

One thing that you should take note when getting a replacement keyboard is the type of connection that it uses. Modern keyboards are usually connected to your computer via a USB port. Older keyboards use a PS/2 connector. Make sure that you have an extra port in your computer which can accommodate your purchased keyboard.

It is best to actually go to the store and experiment typing on a keyboard, than to purchase one online. The ability to physically examine a computer keyboard gives you an idea of how comfortable the keyboard can be. And when purchasing a keyboard as part of a PC upgrade, comfort and ease of use should be among your top priorities.
