Fortunately, it is very easy to increase your hard disk space. Just buy a new drive! Depending on your motherboard, you can fit two or more hard drives inside your computer.
The older Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) drives are still in use but they are largely being replaced by the more modern serial ATA or SATA drives. Modern motherboards that support SATA drives will usually allow you hook up to six SATA drives, which can be a combination of SATA drives and optical drives. Many will also usually permit you to hook up to two IDE drives. The older motherboards that only support IDE hard drives will allow you to use up to four hard drives in the same computer.
If you are installing a new drive due to a shortage of storage space, choose a high-capacity drive such as one that can store 100 gigabytes of data. If you want to increase system performance, get a faster drive. Hard drive speed is measured in rpm. The faster the rpm, the faster your PC can read and write data onto a hard drive. Of course, faster hard drives run hotter too so make sure that you have an efficient cooling system in place.
Check if there is room in your computer case for an extra drive too. If you do not have space for an extra hard drive, you can buy an external hard drive. These hard drives can be connected to your computer using a FireWire port or a USB port. They may be a bit bulky but you can use them on the go.
