Microphone of My Notebook Will Not Work (Windows XP)

You might face this problem when the volume or sound settings of microphone are not configured correctly and even the bad audio drivers can be cause for the problem.
Resolution:

If you are connecting the microphone to the mini jack for microphone, then make sure that it is connected properly.

Also ensure that there is no problem with audio in your notebook. (To test the audio, play any music from your laptop)

Test the microphone sound from Sound Recorder.

You can open this from Accessories in All Programs.

Move to Entertainment and click on Sound Recorder.

Click on Start (red circle) and speak into your microphone and click stop (this is placed beside Start) after a while and click on Play (present beside Stop) and listen to the sound that is recorded.

If you can hear no sound, proceed with the following steps:

If the problem has occurred recently, then try with System Restore. Restore to an earlier point when your microphone was working fine.

If the problem persists even after System Restore, then we need to check the audio settings.

Right click on the Volume icon in task bar and select Adjust Audio Properties.

This will open Sounds and Audio Devices Properties window.

The checkbox beside Mute should be unchecked.

If there is no Volume icon in the taskbar, then click on Start menu and select Control Panel.

In Control Panel select Switch to Classic View and if you are already in Classic View double click on Sound and Audio Devices and check the checkbox beside "Place volume icon in the taskbar" in the Sound and Audio Device properties window.

Click on Advanced button.

Select Options and click on Properties in the Volume Control window.

In the Adjust volume for option, choose Recording option and ensure that Internal Mic is selected, if not select it and click on OK.

Close this window and go back to Sound and Audio Devices Properties window and click on Audio tab.

Select Volume and click on Advanced button in Recording Control window.

If there is no Advanced button, then click on Options and select Advanced Controls.

Make sure that the checkbox 1 Microphone Boost is checked if it is not checked and click on Close.

Close this window and in the Sound and Audio Devices Properties window click on OK.

Check the microphone now.

If the issue is not resolved, then the issue might be due to the sound drivers.

Press and hold Windows Key and break key simultaneously to open the System Properties window and click on Hardware tab and select Device Manager.

Click on "+" next to Sound, video and game controls and uninstall the sound drivers one by one. Restart your computer now and when prompted for installing the audio drivers, install them using Recovery discs or Recovery Partition. If any of these is not available, you can reinstall the drivers from your laptop support website.

Now with the drivers reinstalled, check the microphone.

If the problem still persists, then the issue might be due to hardware. Please contact your notebook support for further assistance.
