Unplug the printer. The printer should be turned off and unplugged before you start applying any moisture to it.
Read the directions. Your printer should come with directions that outline the cleaning process.
Use gentle cleaning products. Use a damp, lint-free towel or a baby wipe to carefully wipe down the outside of the printer, as well as the paper basket and loading tray. Don't let water get into the inside of your printer.
Open your printer. Use a dry cloth to get rid of dust build-up, and look for pieces of paper that may have gotten stuck inside the machinery.
Clean the cartridges. Take out each cartridge and carefully wipe away crusted ink with a cotton swab dipped in warm water. Before doing this, check with your manual or at the manufacturer's web site for specific directions on manual cartridge cleaning.
Plug the printer back in and hook it up to your computer. All printers have an automatic cleaning process.
If the automatic process doesn't work: If your print head is removable, take it out and let it soak in warm water for at least an hour. Then take it out, let it dry on its own, and put it back in the printer.
If your print head isn't removable, take a cotton swab or a small paint brush and dip it in warm water, then run it over your print head.
