Since laptops are used almost universally, power management is essential. Compliance with these rules ensures that during idle periods, these laptops can be put on the "sleep mode". This reduces spinning of the hard-disk and reduces power consumption. Labels placed on the lap-tops make these features clear at the time of purchase.

It is proposed to manufacture laptops that use bamboo, wood and other materials that are bio-degradable. These laptops also come with processors that use less power without compromising on the efficiency of the computer. The process of computing is done on one single server. This helps to save energy. When these computers are repaired, the discarded products are not toxic for the environment. Manufacturers are beginning to introduce attractive buy-back offers. When components of these computers are repaired, some manufacturers have offered to buy back these components, thereby reducing the prospect of toxic waste.

Most of the above changes have been brought about by individual companies. Green is the colour of change. Government regulations and mandates have also brought in changes. But it is heartening to know that individual and organisational initiatives have carried the process further. It is important for consumers to make informed choices and make sustainability an important pre-condition for very product before the purchase.
