Disaster Planning and Server Rentals
Why spend time on disaster planning? You may not want to think about this kind of thing, but you should. Effective disaster planning is the difference between a fast and relatively smooth recovery and, for want of a better word, a disastrous recovery plagued by delays and long periods of downtime.
Many kinds of disasters can affect a business. The most obvious are natural disasters, like fires or floods. Theft can lead to disaster if mission critical equipment is stolen or damaged. And then there are basic mechanical failures that can knock a server offline, affecting your entire network.
Getting up to speed quickly is the key and to do that, you need a comprehensive disaster recovery plan. For the purposes of this discussion, we will assume a happy outcome insofar as staff is concerned. With no injuries to your employees, you can then move on to the first phase of your plan: surveying the damage.
You need an action team that can quickly evaluate your office and determine the scope of the damage. If your computer hardware was affected, you need a quick assessment of the impact so you can get your systems up and running again.
If one or more of your servers is damaged, your entire network will be affected. For that reason, your disaster recovery plan should include the name and number of a computer rentals firm that offers server rentals.
Selecting Your Computer Rentals Partner
There are many computer rentals agencies out there that may make promises about their responsiveness in times of emergency. Before you are faced with a disaster, evaluate a few companies using the following criteria:
- Do they offer fast service? You need a vendor that responds quickly, even more so if you need to relocate your servers temporarily. Talk to your vendor about their typical response time for delivery and setup of your rented servers.
- What about software? Can the vendor load the software you need in a timely fashion?
- What about support? Can you get technicians in your office to help your IT staff? Are service technicians available around the clock to assist you?
- What additional technology do they offer for rent? If you have experienced a natural disaster or theft, you will likely need more than just a server rental. Inquire about the types of equipment and the quantity the vendor has in stock at any given time. If they don't have an item in stock, can they find one for you so your efforts to get up and running aren't compromised?
Emergency situations cannot be avoided, but they can be less difficult with the right planning. Server rentals are just the beginning, but they are a vital starting point for businesses looking to recover quickly from unexpected problems.
